Mao Zedong (毛澤東), a communist, fought alongside Nationalist Chinese forces to repel the Japanese invaders, but once Japan was defeated, the Chinese Civil War resumed. In 1949, Mao drove the Nationalists (Republic of China) into exile in Taiwan, and proclaimed the People's Republic of China (中華人民共和國).
Mao is best remembered for his brutal control of the people, especially during the Cultural Revolution, but many Chinese do respect him for establishing a strong singular Chinese state, something that has traditionally been lacking in history.
